About the Nifty Consumer Services
Nifty Consumer Services is a sector index maintained by NSE Indices Limited. It tracks the Consumer Services stocks in the Nifty Total Market index: every stock from the eligible industries is included, so the rules fix no set number of companies.
How companies are chosen
A stock must be in the Nifty Total Market index at the time of review. Every such stock in the basic industries that belong to the Consumer Services sector is then included, with no further ranking or size cut-off. Those industries include hotels and resorts, restaurants, travel services, wellness, education and e-learning, and retail, among it e-commerce and pharmacy retail. Stocks that leave the Nifty Total Market index also leave this index at the next review.
A stock outside the index that is not available for trading in NSE's Futures & Options segment is ineligible if, in the past six months, it hit its upper or lower price limit on 20% or more of trading days. A day on which it hits both limits counts as two.
The index holds at least 10 stocks. If fewer qualify, the shortfall is filled from stocks ranked within the top 1,000 by both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation, then the top 1,100, 1,200 and so on until 10 are found.
How it is weighted
Each stock's weight is its free-float market capitalisation, capped at 20%. Free-float market capitalisation counts only the shares available for trading, which excludes promoters' holdings, cross-holdings, strategic and government holdings, locked-in shares and similar blocks.
The cap is applied on the last trading day of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec. Between those dates weights move with prices.
When it is reviewed
The index is reconstituted twice a year, in Mar and Sep, using data for the six months ended Jan and Jul. It is rebalanced quarterly. An extra reconstitution happens if a member leaves the Nifty Total Market index or is suspended, delisted or goes through a scheme of arrangement.
Each quarter the index is also checked against SEBI's portfolio concentration norms for ETFs and index funds, announced on 10 Jan 2019, and corrected if it fails them.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 1 Jul 2020 and a base value of 1,000. It was launched on 15 Jun 2026.
