About the BSE India Sector Leaders
BSE India Sector Leaders is a thematic index of the top three companies in each sector within the BSE 500. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
The universe is the BSE 500, counting stocks that are in it or about to join it at the time of review. Sectors follow the common India Industry Classification Structure. Within each sector, stocks are ranked by their average daily total market capitalization over the prior six months, and a maximum of 3 companies per sector are selected.
A current member is not removed at reconstitution while it stays in the top 5 of its sector by full market capitalization. The rules fix no total number of companies. No stock is added between rebalancings, so deletions can only reduce the count until the next one. A company that is reclassified into a sector that makes it ineligible is deleted at the next quarterly share update.
How it is weighted
Float-adjusted market capitalization counts only the part of a company's shares that is available for trading, set by its investable weight factor. Weights follow this measure, with a floor of 1% and a ceiling of 5% on any one stock. The caps are applied each quarter, effective at market open on the Monday after the third Friday of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec.
When it is reviewed
The index rebalances twice a year, effective at market open on the Monday after the third Friday of Jun and Dec. The reference date is after the close of the last trading day of Apr and Oct.
Companies added to the Graded Surveillance Measure list are dropped monthly.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 20 Jun 2005 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 10 Jan 2025.
