About the BSE Consumer Discretionary
The BSE Consumer Discretionary is a sector index of the companies in the BSE AllCap that are classified as consumer discretionary goods and services. It is weighted by float-adjusted market capitalisation, with caps on its largest companies, and is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
Every company in the BSE AllCap is assigned to one of 11 sector indices by its macro-economic indicator, as classified under the common India Industry Classification Structure. This index takes the companies whose indicator is Consumer Discretionary, and every eligible share class of each company goes in. It held 408 companies on 30 Sep 2026.
The BSE AllCap itself excludes companies listed for under six months (one month for IPOs and spin-offs) and those that fail its trading frequency and impact cost screens. Companies on BSE's Graded Surveillance Measure list are excluded. The index was named BSE Consumer Discretionary Goods & Services until the change effective after the close of 16 Sep 2022.
How it is weighted
Float-adjusted market capitalisation counts only the shares available to trade, set by each company's Investable Weight Factor. The index uses it with the caps shared by all BSE sector indices: one company at most 33%, the top three together at most 63%, checked each quarter.
When it is reviewed
Membership and sector classifications are reviewed once a year, effective from market open on the Monday after the third Friday of Sep, using data to the last trading day of Jul. A company reclassified in between moves at the quarterly update in Mar, Jun, Sep or Dec.
Base date and value
The index launched on 15 Apr 2015. Its history starts from 16 Sep 2005, which is also its base date, and its base value is 1000. It is calculated in real time in rupees and US dollars.
