About the Nifty Non-Cyclical Consumer
The Nifty Non-Cyclical Consumer index holds 30 companies chosen to represent the non-cyclical consumer theme: consumer goods and services whose demand tends to stay stable through the economic cycle, such as packaged foods and personal care. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited and drawn from the Nifty 500.
How companies are chosen
The index takes the Nifty 500 companies in its list of eligible industries, such as Diversified FMCG, Packaged Foods, Diversified Retail, Tea & Coffee and Personal Care, and keeps the 30 largest by 6-month average free-float market capitalization. Free-float market capitalization is the value of only those shares available for public trading.
Automobile and leisure-product makers count as cyclical, since their goods are discretionary, and their industries are not on the eligible list. The Nifty India Consumption index, its nearest sibling, also holds at most 30 stocks capped at 10% each, but its sectors include Auto, Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals, and it requires more than 50% of a company's operating revenue to be domestic. The list of eligible industries may change as market conditions change.
How it is weighted
Stocks are weighted by free-float market capitalization, and no stock may exceed 10% at a rebalancing. The capping factors are realigned each quarter, effective from the last trading day of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec.
When it is reviewed
The index is reviewed twice a year. The ranking uses average free-float market capitalization over 6 months, measured at cut-off dates at the end of Jan and Jul, and the new constituents take effect in Mar and Sep.
Base date and value
Its published history starts on 1 Apr 2005, its inception date.
