About balanced hybrid funds in India

Balanced hybrid funds in India are mutual funds that keep 40% to 60% of their money in shares and 40% to 60% in debt, the loans and bonds that pay interest. SEBI sets this band for the category and does not allow arbitrage in it.

What SEBI requires

SEBI's hybrid group has seven categories, and balanced hybrid is the one with an even split. The fund holds 40% to 60% of its assets in equity and equity-related instruments, and 40% to 60% in debt instruments. A revised classification circular of 26 Feb 2026 keeps these bands and describes the fund as an open-ended balanced scheme investing only in equity and debt, with no arbitrage. Existing schemes were given six months from that date to comply.

Arbitrage

Arbitrage means buying shares and selling futures on the same shares, locking in a small price gap. Funds in the arbitrage category and many balanced advantage funds use it to count a share holding as hedged. A balanced hybrid fund cannot, so its equity share is real exposure to share prices, not a hedged position.

Neighbouring categories

Aggressive hybrid funds hold 65% to 80% in equity and conservative hybrid funds 10% to 25%, so balanced hybrid sits between them. Dynamic asset allocation or balanced advantage funds have no fixed band and move between equity and debt as their managers decide. A balanced hybrid fund's mix can drift only inside 40% to 60%.

Tax treatment

The tax law treats a fund with at least 65% in Indian shares as equity-oriented, and one with more than 65% in debt as a debt fund. A balanced hybrid fund holds at most 60% of either, so it meets neither test. Gains on units held more than 24 months are taxed at 12.5% without indexation; gains on units held 24 months or less are added to income and taxed at the slab rate.
