About FMP funds in India

FMP funds in India are fixed maturity plans, closed-ended debt mutual funds that run for a set term and repay all unitholders on the maturity date. The fund buys bonds and money market instruments that mature on or before that date.

What an FMP is

A fixed maturity plan takes money during a short offer period and then accepts no new units. The manager holds the debt papers until they mature, so the portfolio and the end date are fixed from the start.

An FMP cannot declare an indicative return before it starts, and the final return depends on what the papers earn and on any default. Many series carry their term in the name, in days or months.

SEBI rules for FMPs

SEBI requires a closed-ended scheme to be listed on a stock exchange, and units cannot be redeemed with the fund house before the maturity period ends. The only exit before maturity is selling on the exchange, where trading in such units is often thin.

A closed-ended scheme must be fully redeemed at maturity unless unitholders agree in writing to roll over. SEBI's Mutual Funds Regulations, 2026, in force since 1 Apr 2026 in place of the 1996 regulations, carry these rules forward.

FMPs and open-ended debt funds

An open-ended debt fund takes in and pays out money every day and has no end date. An FMP does neither: its holdings are matched to one maturity date, so changes in interest rates matter less to its return than to a fund that keeps buying and selling. Credit risk, the chance a borrower does not repay, stays.

Taxation

Gains on units of a fund with more than 65% in debt and money market instruments, bought on or after 1 Apr 2023, are treated as short-term capital gains whatever the holding period and are taxed at the investor's income tax slab rate. Units bought earlier follow older rules.

How this page lists them

The page lists the live FMPs ordered by 5-year return, highest first, with series younger than five years after them by name. It also lists a few interval funds, which take purchases and redemptions only in set windows. Size is the average money managed over the latest quarter and cost is the yearly expense ratio.

Returns use the Direct plan where one exists and run to each series' latest NAV, with 3-year and 5-year figures compounded per year. The category medians are the middle Direct-plan return for each window; the 5-year median rests on few funds, since most live series are younger than five years.
