About the Nifty Capital Goods
The Nifty Capital Goods index holds up to 50 stocks from the Capital Goods sector, drawn from the Nifty Total Market Index. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Stocks in the Nifty Total Market Index at the time of review are eligible if they belong to basic industries that are part of the Capital Goods sector.
Step 1 selects the top 50 stocks by 6-month average free-float market capitalization among eligible stocks available for trading in the Futures & Options (F&O) segment, meaning stocks on which futures and options contracts trade. If fewer than 50 result, Step 2 fills the gap by the same measure from the remaining eligible universe.
A stock outside the F&O segment that is not already a member is ineligible if it hit the upper or lower circuit (price band) on 20% or more of the trading days in the past 6 months.
How it is weighted
Each stock is weighted by its free-float market capitalization, which counts only the floating stock available for trading, with no single stock above 20%.
Capping is done quarterly, on the last trading day of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec. Weights drift between rebalances as prices move.
When it is reviewed
The index is reviewed semi-annually in Mar and Sep, using data for the six months ended Jan and Jul respectively.
At review, F&O stocks are included compulsorily and replace the smallest members outside F&O, up to 50 stocks. A stock outside F&O enters only if its free-float market capitalization is at least 1.5 times that of the smallest constituent outside F&O. The rules aim for at least 10 stocks; if fewer qualify, the shortfall is filled from the top 1000 stocks by turnover and market capitalization, then wider ranks, and the index may still hold fewer than 10.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 15 Jun 2026.
