About the BSE Consumer Durables
BSE CONSUMER DURABLES is a sector index of companies in the BSE 500 that the BSE industry classification places in consumer durables. Its rules keep at least 10 companies in it. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
A company must be in the BSE 500 and sit in one of ten basic industries: household appliances, footwear, gems and jewellery and watches, paints, ceramics, furniture and home furnishing, consumer plastic products, houseware, consumer electronics, and leather and leather products. This list of industries is what separates it from the other seven BSE sector indices, which share the same selection steps with their own industry lists.
Eligible stocks are taken in order of average float-adjusted market capitalization rank until they reach 90% of the sector's average float-adjusted market capitalization. A company must have a minimum trading frequency of 90% in the preceding six months. A buffer of 2% applies to keep turnover down: a non-constituent enters only if it falls within 88% coverage, and a member leaves only if it falls beyond 92%. The buffer applies once the 90% coverage is met. If that leaves fewer than 10 companies, members are retained and non-members added by average float-adjusted market capitalization rank until the index has 10.
How it is weighted
Companies are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization: market capitalization after counting only the available float, which each company's Investable Weight Factor defines. Unlike BSE BANKEX, BSE OIL & GAS and BSE POWER, this index has no weight cap.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced twice a year, in Jun and Dec. Investable Weight Factors are reviewed every quarter and applied at the open of the Monday following the third Friday of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec.
Base date and value
The index launched on 9 Aug 1999. Its first value date and base date are both 1 Feb 1999, and its base value is 1000.
