About the BSE Information Technology
The BSE Information Technology index tracks the companies in the BSE AllCap that are classified as information technology. It is a sector index maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd. and the successor to the BSE IT index, whose history it carries before 15 Apr 2015.
How companies are chosen
Only members of the BSE AllCap can enter. That index starts from every company listed and traded on BSE, drops those in the Y, Z and P groups, SME platform and suspended companies and recent listings (under six months, or one month for IPOs and spin-offs), and requires a company to have traded on at least 80% of trading days, with an impact cost (the extra price paid to trade at once) of 1% or less, over the prior six months.
Each Sep every company is assigned to a sector index by its macro-economic indicator under the common India Industry Classification Structure. This index holds the companies classified as Information Technology. Before 15 Apr 2015, as the BSE IT, it took only BSE 500 companies, enough to cover at least 90% of the sector's average float market capitalization. If a company's classification changes between reconstitutions, the move is made at the next quarterly share update.
How it is weighted
Members are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization, which is market value counting only the shares available to trade. As a sector index it is also capped, quarterly: no company may exceed 33% of the index and the top three together may not exceed 63%. Excess weight is shared proportionately among the uncapped stocks, and the ranking by weight stays in line with the ranking by float-adjusted market capitalization.
When it is reviewed
The index is reconstituted once a year, effective at market open on the Monday after the third Friday of Sep, using data as of the last trading day of Jul. Sector changes are applied quarterly, effective the Monday after the third Friday of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec, using data as of the last trading day of Jan, Apr, Jul and Oct; the caps are reapplied on the same dates.
Base date and value
The index was launched on 9 Aug 1999, with its first value on 1 Feb 1999. Its base date is 15 Apr 2015 and its base value 11,501.95, the BSE IT's closing value on that day.
