About the BSE MidSmall Private Banks Quality Tilt
The BSE MidSmall Private Banks Quality Tilt is an index of companies in the BSE 1000, excluding the BSE 100 LargeCap TMC, that are classified as Private Sector Bank or Other Bank, weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization and a quality score. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
The universe is the companies in the BSE 1000 that trade under a permitted category at BSE.
Companies are ranked by average free-float market capitalization, and only those ranking above the 25th percentile are retained.
Companies in the BSE Large Cap 100 TMC are then excluded, and the companies classified as Private Banks or Other Banks under the Basic Industry form the index.
How it is weighted
Constituents are weighted by the product of float-adjusted market capitalization and a quality score, with an individual stock weight cap of 33%. The capping algorithm redistributes the excess weight to the other stocks in proportion to their initial weights.
The quality score starts from two ratios: return on equity, a company's trailing 12-month earnings per share divided by its latest book value per share, and the financial leverage ratio, its latest total debt divided by its book value.
Each ratio is turned into a z-score, a standardised value that lets ratios on different scales be combined, using the mean and standard deviation within the index universe and a separate formula for each ratio, and a simple average of the two scores is taken. An average above 0 gives a quality score of 1 plus the average; an average below 0 gives 1 divided by 1 minus the average; an average of 0 gives 1.
Outlier ratios are winsorized, meaning values beyond the 2.5 and 97.5 percentile ranks are set equal to the values at those ranks. Average z-scores above 4 or below -4 are set to 4 or -4.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semi-annually, in Jun and Dec. Individual stock weight caps are applied quarterly, at the open of the Monday following the third Friday of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec.
Base date and value
The index launched on 23 Feb 2026, and its values start on 24 Dec 2018.
