About the BSE Midcap 150 Momentum 30

BSE Midcap 150 Momentum 30 measures the performance of the 30 companies in the BSE 150 MidCap Index that show the most persistence in their relative performance, based on momentum scores. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.

How companies are chosen

A stock is eligible if it traded on every working day of the prior six months and has a turnover ratio of at least 20%. The turnover ratio is the annualized traded value divided by the average daily float-adjusted market capitalization.

Eligible companies with a listing history of at least one year are ranked by momentum score. The top 21 are selected whether or not they are current constituents. Existing constituents ranked 22 to 39 are then added in order of rank until 30 is reached. If the count is still short, non-constituents are added in order of rank.

How it is weighted

Constituents are weighted by the product of float-adjusted market capitalization and momentum score, with a cap of 5% on any one stock. Capping moves the excess weight to the other stocks in proportion to their initial weights.

The momentum value is the 12-month price change at the reference date, adjusted by the stock's volatility, the standard deviation of its daily price returns over the same period. For a positive price change, lower volatility improves the adjusted value; for a negative price change, higher volatility does.

A z-score is a widely adopted method of standardizing a variable; here it is calculated for each adjusted value using the mean and standard deviation of the index universe, and it is capped at plus or minus 3. A z-score above 0 gives a momentum score of 1 plus the z-score; below 0 it gives 1 divided by 1 minus the z-score.

When it is reviewed

The index is rebalanced quarterly, effective at market open on the Monday following the third Friday of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec.

The universe and other data are taken as of the last day of the month before the rebalancing date. No companies are added between rebalancings, so the count can fall below 30 after deletions.

Base date and value

The index was launched on 12 Jan 2026; its values start from 20 Jun 2005 (its first value date).
