About the BSE Low Volatility Index
The BSE Low Volatility Index tracks the 30 companies in the BSE LargeMidCap with the lowest volatilities, as measured by standard deviation. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
Companies come from the BSE LargeMidCap, a size sub-index of the BSE AllCap. Each must have an average daily float-adjusted market capitalization of at least ₹2,000 crore, an annualized traded value of at least ₹1,000 crore, a turnover ratio (annualized traded value divided by average daily float-adjusted market capitalization) of at least 20% and no more than five non-trading days in the past six months. Current members stay eligible at ₹1,600 crore, ₹800 crore and a 16% turnover ratio.
Eligible companies with a listing history of at least one year are ranked on the inverse of their volatility. Volatility is the standard deviation of a stock's daily price returns over the prior one year of trading days.
The top 24 companies are selected, then existing constituents ranked 25 to 36 in order of rank until the count reaches 30.
How it is weighted
Each company's weight is set inversely proportional to its volatility, with a maximum of 5% for any one security. The caps are applied at each semi-annual rebalancing.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semi-annually in Mar and Sep, effective from market open on the Monday following the third Friday of Mar and Sep. No companies are added between rebalancings.
Base date and value
The index launched on 3 Dec 2015, and its first value date is 16 Sep 2005.
