About the BSE Quality Index
The BSE Quality Index measures the performance of the 30 highest quality companies in the BSE LargeMidCap, ranked by a quality score built from return on equity, accruals ratio and financial leverage ratio. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
The universe is the BSE LargeMidCap, a size sub-index of the BSE AllCap. A company must have an average daily float-adjusted market capitalization of at least ₹2,000 crore, an annualized traded value of at least ₹1,000 crore and no more than five non-trading days in the past six months.
Eligible companies are ranked by quality score. The top 24 are selected whether or not they are current members, then existing members ranked 25 to 36 are added in rank order until the count reaches 30. A stock whose earnings per share or book value per share behind its return on equity is negative is ineligible.
How it is weighted
The quality score starts from three ratios. Return on equity is trailing 12-month earnings per share divided by the latest book value per share. The accruals ratio is the change in net operating assets over the last year divided by average total assets over the last two years. The financial leverage ratio is latest total debt divided by book value.
Each ratio is turned into a z-score, a way of standardizing a variable so that variables on different scales can be combined. The three z-scores are averaged, except that the accruals ratio is left out for Financial Services and Realty companies.
Average z-scores are held between 4 and -4. A positive average z-score gives a quality score of 1 plus the z-score, and a negative one gives 1 divided by (1 minus the z-score).
Each company is weighted by its float-adjusted market capitalization weight times its quality score. A security's weight is at most the lower of 5% and 20 times its float-adjusted market capitalization weight in the eligible universe, one India Industry Classification Structure macroeconomic indicator is capped at 30%, and each stock is floored at 0.05%. Diversified companies are treated as Industrials.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced twice a year, effective from market open on the Monday after the third Friday of Mar and Sep. The fundamental data reference date is five weeks before the rebalancing date.
No company is added between rebalancings, so the count can fall below 30 after deletions. Companies added to the Graded Surveillance Measure (GSM) list are dropped monthly and stay out until they have been off the list for six consecutive months before a rebalancing reference date.
Base date and value
The index was launched on 3 Dec 2015. Its first value date is 16 Sep 2005.
