About the Nifty PSE
The Nifty PSE is an index of 20 listed companies in which the Central Government and/or State Government holds 51% of the outstanding share capital, designed to reflect the behaviour of public sector enterprises. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Companies must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review and have 51% of their outstanding share capital held by the Central Government and/or State Government, directly or indirectly.
A company also needs a trading frequency of at least 90% in the last six months and a listing history of at least 1 month at the cutoff date.
Where a sector has fewer than 10 eligible stocks in the Nifty 500, the shortfall is filled from the top 800 companies ranked by average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation. The final 20 companies are chosen by free-float market capitalization, the value of the shares normally expected to be available for trading in the market.
How it is weighted
Each stock is weighted by its free-float market capitalization. At each rebalancing no single stock may be more than 33% of the index and the top 3 stocks together no more than 62%.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semi-annually, with cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul each year. Average data for the six months ending the cut-off date is used.
Base date and value
The base date is 2 Jan 1995 and the base value is 1000.
