About Nifty Private Bank index funds and ETFs

Nifty Private Bank index funds and ETFs are funds that hold the 10 private sector banks of the Nifty Private Bank index, so their return follows the index less costs. They come as index funds, bought from the fund house at NAV, and ETFs, traded on the exchange.

The index they track

The Nifty Private Bank is maintained by NSE Indices. Members must be in the Nifty 500 and in the basic industry Private Sector Bank. A bank needs a month's listing and trades on at least 90% of days over six months, and the 10 largest by free float market capitalisation (the value of the shares available for public trading) are chosen. The base date is 1 Apr 2005 at 1000, and the index launched on 5 Jan 2016.

Weights and caps

Weights follow free float market capitalisation, capped at each review so that no bank exceeds 23% and the three largest together stay within 62%. Reviews use average data for the six months to 31 Jan and 31 Jul.

Ten banks in one fund

With 10 banks, up to 62% of a fund on this index sits in three stocks at a review. Every fund holds the same banks in the same weights, so what separates them is cost and how closely each follows the index.

Tracking difference and tracking error

Tracking difference is the fund's one-year return less the index's; costs make it negative, so nearer nought is closer. The after fee figure adds the year's average expense ratio back, showing the drift that is not the fee. Tracking error is how much the fund's daily returns differed from the index's, as a yearly figure.

Expense ratio and order

The expense ratio is the yearly charge as a share of money invested, taken from NAV, the value of one unit, every day. The index fund table switches between direct and regular plans; the ETF table adds premium or discount, the median, across the month's trading days, of each day's close divided by that day's NAV, less one. Each table puts the fund closest to the index first, then the lower expense ratio.
