About the Nifty Midcap150 Momentum 50

Nifty Midcap150 Momentum 50 is an index of the top 50 companies within the Nifty Midcap 150, ranked by a Normalized Momentum Score built from 6-month and 12-month price return, adjusted for volatility. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.

How companies are chosen

Stocks in the Nifty Midcap 150 at the time of review, or going to form part of it, are eligible, with a minimum listing history of 1 year as on the cut-off date.

Stocks not available for trading in the Futures & Options (F&O) segment are ineligible if, in the past 6 months to the cut-off date, the number of times they hit their daily price limit (upper or lower circuit) was 20% or more of the trading days. A stock that hits both circuits on the same trading day is counted as two instances.

How it is weighted

A stock's momentum ratio is its 12-month or 6-month price return divided by the annualised standard deviation of its lognormal daily returns for 1 year.

Each ratio becomes a Z score against the mean and standard deviation of the eligible universe. The Weighted Average Z Score gives 50% to the 12-month Z score and 50% to the 6-month Z score.

The Normalized Momentum Score is 1 plus the Weighted Average Z score where that is zero or above, and 1 divided by (1 minus the Z score) where it is below zero.

A stock's weight is its free float market cap, which is based on the shares normally expected to be available for trading in the market, multiplied by its Normalized Momentum Score. Each stock is capped at the lower of 5% or 5 times its weight based only on free float market capitalization, and capping is done semi-annually at rebalancing.

When it is reviewed

The index is re-balanced semi-annually using data ending the last trading day of May and Nov, and weights are capped in Jun and Dec.

A buffer limits turnover: an eligible existing member whose Normalized Momentum score rank is within the top 75 continues in the index, and the top 25 ranked stocks not already in it are compulsorily included.

An ad-hoc reconstitution is also started if a constituent is removed from the Nifty Midcap 150 because of a corporate action.

Base date and value

The index has a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 16 Aug 2022.
