About Nifty Smallcap 50 index funds and ETFs

Nifty Smallcap 50 index funds and ETFs are funds that hold the 50 smallcap companies of the Nifty Smallcap 50, the index maintained by NSE Indices, so that their return follows the index less costs.

What the Nifty Smallcap 50 is

The Nifty Smallcap 50 was launched on 1 Apr 2016, with a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1,000. It is weighted by free-float market capitalisation: each company counts by the value of its shares available for trading. Its parent, the Nifty Smallcap 250, holds the companies ranked 251 to 500 in the Nifty 500.

How companies are chosen

A company must rank in the top 150 of the Nifty Smallcap 250 on both average daily full market capitalisation and average daily turnover over the previous six months. From that group, the 50 with the largest six month average free-float market capitalisation are picked. The index is reviewed twice a year on data for six months ending Jan and Jul, and changes take effect from the last trading day of Mar and Sep.

Tracking difference and tracking error

Tracking difference is how far the fund's return over the year fell short of, or exceeded, the index's; costs usually keep it below zero. The After fee column adds back the year's average expense ratio, leaving the gap from other causes. Tracking error is the yearly measure of how much daily returns differed.

Expense ratio and fund size

The expense ratio is the annual charge as a share of money invested, taken out of NAV (net asset value, the value of one unit) daily, so the returns shown are net of it. Fund size is assets under management at month end across all plans.
