About the Nifty High Beta 50
The Nifty High Beta 50 is an index of 50 stocks listed on NSE that have a high beta, a measure of how sensitively a stock's returns move with market returns, with the Nifty 50 as the market. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Companies must rank within the top 300 by average free-float market cap (counted on the floating shares available for trading, taken from public shareholding) and average daily turnover over the last six months. They need a listing history of 1 year and must have traded on every trading day of the last year.
Beta is calculated from 1 year of trailing prices, adjusted for corporate actions, and the eligible securities are ranked from the highest beta down. The top 50 form the index. Only stocks with a beta above 1 are selected at each review; if too few qualify, the stock with the next highest beta is considered.
A 100% buffer applies at each review: an existing constituent that ranks within the top 100 can be retained.
How it is weighted
Each stock's weight follows its beta, so the stock with the highest beta carries the highest weight. Weights are reset at every rebalancing.
When it is reviewed
The index is reviewed quarterly, using data for the six months ending on the last trading day of Feb, May, Aug and Nov.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 31 Dec 2003 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 19 Nov 2012.
