About the BSE Oil & Gas Index
BSE Oil & Gas is an index of the companies in the BSE 500 that are classified as members of the oil & gas sector by the BSE industry classification system. Like each BSE sector index, it holds a minimum of 10 companies.
How companies are chosen
Eligible stocks are ranked by average float-adjusted market capitalization until 90% of the sector's average float-adjusted market capitalization is covered. Companies must also have traded on at least 90% of days in the preceding six months.
A 2% buffer applies: a non-constituent is included only if it falls within 88% coverage, and an existing constituent is excluded only if it falls above 92% coverage.
The basic industries counted as oil and gas include Refineries & Marketing, Oil Exploration & Production, Lubricants, Offshore Support Solution Drilling, Gas Transmission/Marketing and Oil Equipment & Services.
How it is weighted
Constituents are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization, with a 20% cap on any one company. Float is the part of a company's shares available for trading, reviewed every quarter. Excess weight above the cap goes proportionally to the remaining stocks.
Since 1 Apr 2015 the index has used a capped weighting scheme; before that date it was weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semiannually, in Jun and Dec. Weights are reset at each quarterly share update.
Base date and value
The index was launched on 23 Aug 2004. Its first value date is 1 Feb 1999.
