About the BSE Utilities
BSE Utilities is the index of companies in the BSE AllCap whose macro-economic indicator is Utilities, 37 companies on 30 Sep 2026. It is weighted by float-adjusted market cap and maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
The index is one of 11 sector indices cut from the BSE AllCap, the index it uses as its universe. A company belongs to it when its macro-economic indicator, as classified by the common India Industry Classification Structure, is Utilities. All eligible share classes of a company go into the same index. Utilities is the only indicator behind this index; BSE Industrials, by contrast, takes Industrials and Diversified, and Energy and Telecommunication each have an index of their own.
The rules fix no number of companies, so the count follows the classification. If a company's indicator changes between reconstitutions, the change is applied at the next quarterly share update, in Mar, Jun, Sep or Dec.
How it is weighted
Float-adjusted market cap sets the weights: each company counts only for the shares available for trading. Like every BSE sector index, it caps one company at 33% and the top three together at 63%, with any excess shared among the uncapped stocks.
When it is reviewed
The index is reconstituted once a year: members are drawn from the BSE AllCap each Sep, effective at market open on the Monday following the third Friday of that month.
Base date and value
The index has a base value of 1000, a first value date of 16 Sep 2005 and a launch date of 15 Apr 2015. It is calculated in rupees and US dollars.
