About the BSE Power & Energy
The BSE Power & Energy is an index of the companies in the BSE 500 from the energy and power sectors, maintained by BSE Index Services. It held 36 companies on 30 Sep 2026.
How companies are chosen
The index starts from the BSE 500. Every company classified under the Macro-Economic Indicator "Energy" is eligible, and so is every company that sits under "Utilities" and is subcategorised as Power at the Industry level. All eligible stocks form the index, so the number of members follows from the BSE 500 rather than from a fixed count.
How it is weighted
Each stock is weighted by its float-adjusted market capitalization: the market value of only the shares available for trading. No single stock can weigh more than 15%. The cap is applied each quarter, at the open of the Monday after the third Friday of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec, using closing prices on the Wednesday before the second Friday of that month.
Any addition to or deletion from the index triggers an extra rebalancing that resets every stock's cap, using closing prices seven business days before the rebalancing date.
When it is reviewed
Membership is reconstituted twice a year, effective at the open of the Monday after the third Friday of Jun and Dec, with the last trading day of Apr and Oct as the reference date.
Base date and value
The index was launched on 4 Oct 2024. Its first value date is 31 Dec 2013, with a base value of 1000.
