About the Nifty MidSmall Financial Services

The Nifty MidSmall Financial Services index tracks the mid cap and small cap stocks of the financial services sector. It holds up to 30 companies, selected from its parent, the Nifty MidSmallcap 400. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.

How companies are chosen

A company must belong to the Nifty MidSmallcap 400 at the time of review. A stock outside the futures and options segment is ineligible if, in the 6 months to the cut-off date, its hits on the upper or lower price band number at least 20% of the trading days; a stock that hits both bands on one day counts as two instances.

From the eligible financial services stocks, the 30 with the largest 6-month average free-float market capitalization are selected. Free float is the part of a company's shares available for trading; promoter holdings are among those left out.

If fewer than 30 stocks are eligible, the index keeps the number available. At a review, an eligible stock not in the index replaces the smallest member only if its free-float market capitalization is at least 1.5 times that member's.

How it is weighted

Each stock is weighted by its free-float market capitalization. At the time of rebalancing, a stock's weight is capped at 33% and the three largest together at 62%, with capping done on the last trading day of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec.

When it is reviewed

The index is re-balanced semi-annually, using average data for the six months ending the cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul. It is reconstituted with the Nifty MidSmallcap 400 in Mar and Sep.

An ad-hoc reconstitution follows if a member is excluded from the Nifty MidSmallcap 400, is suspended or delisted, or undergoes a scheme of arrangement.

Base date and value

The index launched on 3 Aug 2022, with a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1000 points.
