About the BSE Auto

BSE AUTO is an index of the companies in the BSE 500 that are classified in the transportation equipment sector under the BSE industry classification system. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.

How companies are chosen

The Auto sector covers these basic industries: Auto Components & Equipments, Passenger Cars & Utility Vehicles, Tyres & Rubber Products, 2/3 Wheelers, Commercial Vehicles, Tractors and Auto Dealer.

Companies are ranked by average float-adjusted market capitalization (each company's investable weight factor defines its available float) and taken in until they reach 90% of the sector's total. Each must also have traded on at least 90% of days in the preceding six months.

A 2% buffer applies to both inclusion and exclusion: a company outside the index joins only if it falls within 88% coverage, and a member leaves only if it falls above 92%. The buffer applies only after the 90% coverage is reached. To keep a minimum of 10 companies, existing members are retained and non-members are added by rank.

How it is weighted

The index is weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization.

When it is reviewed

The index is rebalanced twice a year, in Jun and Dec.

Between rebalancings, a company that moves to an ineligible sector is dropped at the next quarterly update. In Mar and Sep, deletions are made without replacements, even if the company count falls below 10. Replacements are made only at the Jun and Dec rebalancings.

Base date and value

The index was launched on 23 Aug 2004. Its values start on 1 Feb 1999, the first value date.
