About the BSE BANKEX

BSE BANKEX is the BSE index of banks, made up of the companies in the BSE 500 that the BSE industry classification system places in the banks sector. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.

How companies are chosen

Banks are ranked by average float-adjusted market capitalization, and stocks are taken down the ranking until they cover at least 90% of the sector's average float-adjusted market capitalization. A company must also have traded on at least 90% of days in the preceding six months.

A 2% buffer applies at both ends: a company outside the index enters only if it falls within 88% coverage, and a member leaves only if it falls above 92%, and the buffer applies only once the 90% coverage is met. To keep at least 14 members, members are retained and non-members added by average float-adjusted market capitalization rank, with preference to derivative stocks.

How it is weighted

Members are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization, with no company above 19% and the top 3 together no more than 43%. The top 5 together are capped at 60%, any excess weight is shared proportionally among the other stocks, and weights keep a descending order from top to bottom.

Float-adjusted weighting has applied since 26 Dec 2025, and the 19% and 43% caps since 28 May 2026.

When it is reviewed

The index is rebalanced semiannually, in Jun and Dec.

Base date and value

Its history starts on 1 Jan 2002, the first date for which a value is calculated; it was launched on 23 Jun 2003.
