About the Nifty100 Low Volatility 30
Nifty100 Low Volatility 30 is an index of the 30 stocks in the Nifty 100 with the lowest volatility, measured as the standard deviation of daily price returns over the last year. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
The index draws on the securities in the Nifty 100 that have a listing history of at least 1 year and can be traded in the derivatives (F&O) segment.
Eligible stocks are ranked on their volatility score, with the lowest volatility ranked 1. The top 30 form the index.
At a reconstitution, the latest composition of the Nifty 100 is used, including changes that are announced or yet to be announced.
How it is weighted
The first step sets each constituent's weight from its volatility.
Turnover is the value of a stock traded. A stock whose 6-month average turnover is below that of the lowest-turnover stock in the Nifty 50 is capped at 3%, and the excess is distributed among the non-capped stocks in proportion to their low volatility weights. The cap makes the index replicable for passive products.
Weights are capped at each quarterly review and can change between reviews as stock prices move.
When it is reviewed
The index is reconstituted quarterly, using data ending on the last trading day of Feb, May, Aug and Nov.
Volatility at each review uses closing prices, adjusted for corporate actions, of the one-year period ending on those dates.
An existing constituent ranked within the top 60 on the low volatility score is retained. Stocks with the lowest volatility rank are added to replace the exclusions.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 8 Jul 2016.
