About stock splits in 2024

Stock splits in 2024 lists the splits by companies listed on NSE or BSE that went ex in that calendar year. A stock split divides each share's face value into smaller parts, so a company has more shares at a lower price each. Each entry shows the old and new face value, record date and ex-date.

What a stock split is

A stock split, also called a sub-division, cuts the face value of a share, the nominal value printed on it, into smaller units. A split from ₹10 to ₹1 turns every share held into ten. The price of each share falls to a tenth, and the company's market cap, its share price times its number of shares, stays the same.

How the list is built

The page includes every split whose ex-date fell in 2024, grouped by month with the latest ex-date first. Each company name links to its bonus and split history. Nestle India split from ₹10 to ₹1 in Jan 2024, and Canara Bank from ₹10 to ₹2 in May 2024.

Columns are the company with its ticker and sector, the face value before and after, the record date, the ex-date, the price and the market cap. A dash in market cap means no figure is available.

Record date and ex-date

The record date is the day the company checks its register to see who is entitled to the new shares. The ex-date is the first day the share trades at the split-adjusted price.

Trades settle one working day after they are made (T+1), so the two dates usually fall on the same day.

Rules for a split

Under the Companies Act, 2013, a company can sub-divide its shares only if its articles of association allow it and shareholders approve it by resolution.

On the ex-date the raw price shows a step down, so charts adjust earlier prices by the split ratio.

Split and bonus compared

A split divides the face value and leaves reserves alone. A bonus issue keeps the face value and gives extra shares free out of reserves, in a ratio such as 1 for 1.
