About the Nifty Smallcap250 Quality 50

Nifty Smallcap250 Quality 50 is an index of up to 50 small cap stocks chosen from the Nifty Smallcap 250 by quality score. The score is built from return on equity (ROE), financial leverage (the debt-to-equity ratio) and the variability of earnings per share (EPS) growth over the previous 5 years. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.

How companies are chosen

Stocks in the Nifty Smallcap 250 at the time of review are eligible, and each must have a minimum listing history of 1 year.

A company with more than 20% of its promoters' shares pledged is ineligible. So are the stocks in the bottom 10 percentile on value score (built from earnings, book value and sales relative to price, and dividend yield), on 6 month average daily turnover and on high volatility.

A stock outside futures and options trading is also ineligible if the number of times it hit the upper or lower circuit in the past 6 months is at least 20% of the trading days in that period.

A stock with negative EPS in any of the previous 6 fiscal years is not considered for selection. The top 50 stocks by quality score are then selected. If the eligible universe falls below 50 stocks, the index continues with the number available.

How it is weighted

Each parameter gets a Z score for every eligible stock: the stock's value minus the mean of the eligible universe, divided by the standard deviation of the eligible universe. Return on equity and debt-to-equity use the latest fiscal year, and EPS growth variability uses the adjusted EPS of the previous 6 years.

For a company outside financial services, the weighted average Z score is 1/3 of the ROE Z score, minus 1/3 of the debt-to-equity Z score, minus 1/3 of the EPS growth variability Z score. For a financial services company, it is 0.5 of the ROE Z score minus 0.5 of the EPS growth variability Z score. The quality score is 1 plus the average Z score where that is above 0, and (1 minus the average Z score) to the power of -1 where it is below 0.

The index is tilt weighted: a stock's weight is the square root of its free float market cap (the market cap of the floating stock, the shares available for trading) multiplied by its quality score, and no stock is held above the lower of 5% or 5 times its weight on free float market cap alone.

The cap is applied at each reconstitution, and weights drift between two rebalancing periods as prices move.

When it is reviewed

The index is reconstituted twice a year, in Jun and Dec, using data ending on the last trading day of May and Nov. The cut-off dates are 31 May and 30 Nov, six-month average data to the cut-off date is used, and four weeks of notice are given before a change.

A member ranked within the top 75 by quality score stays. A non-member ranked within the top 25 is added, replacing the member with the lowest score, and a member ranked beyond 75 is removed and replaced by the next highest ranked stock on quality score. An extra reconstitution is started if a member leaves the Nifty Smallcap 250 through a corporate action such as a scheme of arrangement or delisting, or through suspension by the exchange.

Base date and value

The base date is 1 Apr 2005 and the base value is 1000. The index was launched on 15 Mar 2023.
