About the Nifty200 Quality 30
Nifty200 Quality 30 is an index of 30 companies drawn from the Nifty 200. They are selected on a quality score built from return on equity, the debt to equity ratio and the variability of earnings per share growth over the previous 5 years.
How companies are chosen
Eligible stocks belong to the Nifty 200 at the time of review, have a listing history of at least 1 year and have futures and options (F&O) traded on them.
A stock with negative EPS in any of the previous 6 fiscal years is not considered. A recently listed company is considered if it has enough adjusted EPS data to calculate EPS growth variability over at least the previous 3 financial years.
The 30 stocks with the highest quality scores are selected, companies with higher profitability, lower leverage and more stable earnings.
How it is weighted
Each parameter gets a Z score, which is the stock's value minus the mean of the eligible universe, divided by the universe's standard deviation. Return on equity (ROE) and debt-to-equity (D/E) use the latest fiscal year. EPS growth variability uses adjusted EPS of the previous 6 years.
For non-financial companies the weighted Z score is 0.33 times the Z score of return on equity, plus 0.33 times the negative of the Z score of debt-to-equity, plus 0.33 times the negative of the Z score of EPS growth variability. Financial services companies skip debt-to-equity and use 0.5 on return on equity and 0.5 on the negative of EPS growth variability.
The quality score is 1 plus the average Z score where that is above 0, and 1 divided by (1 minus the average Z score) where it is below 0.
A stock's weight comes from multiplying the square root of its free float market cap by its quality score. Each stock is capped at the lower of 5% or 5 times its weight based only on free float market capitalization, applied semi-annually at rebalancing.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced semi-annually, in Jun and Dec. The 10 top-ranked stocks by quality score are included compulsorily, and existing members ranked beyond 50 are excluded compulsorily.
Stocks that move out of the Nifty 200 at the review also leave the index. Suspension, delisting or a scheme of arrangement triggers an additional ad-hoc rebalancing.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 1 Apr 2005 and a base value of 1000. It launched on 17 Apr 2018.
