About Nifty Auto index funds and ETFs

Nifty Auto index funds and ETFs are funds that hold the 15 automobile companies of the Nifty Auto in the index's own weights, so their return follows the index less costs.

The index they track

The Nifty Auto covers the Automobiles sector: makers of cars and motorcycles, heavy vehicles, auto ancillaries (component suppliers) and tyres. It holds 15 companies, chosen by free-float market capitalization, the value of the shares available for trading. A company must be in the Nifty 500. NSE Indices maintains it. The base date is 1 Jan 2004 with a base value of 1000, and the index launched on 12 Jul 2011.

Weight caps

At each rebalancing no single company can weigh more than 33%, and the top 3 together no more than 62%. The index is reviewed twice a year, with cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul, and a fund that tracks it trades to match.

Index funds and ETFs

An index fund buys and redeems units at the day's NAV (net asset value, the value of one unit); an ETF trades on the exchange at a price that can differ from it. Funds that follow a single sector index hold a small group of companies, so a fund on the Nifty Auto spreads its money over 15 companies where one on the Nifty 50 spreads it over 50.

Tracking difference and tracking error

Tracking difference is the fund's return minus the index's return over the same period, and costs usually leave it below zero. This page shows the one-year figure, and an after fee figure that adds the year's average expense ratio back. Tracking error is the yearly measure of how far daily fund returns moved from daily index returns.

Order and plans

The table lists funds by tracking difference nearest zero, then by lower expense ratio, the yearly fee as a share of assets, deducted from NAV daily. It switches between direct plans and regular plans, which pay a distributor. Size is assets under management at month-end, across all plans of the fund. A fund with no one-year tracking difference shows a dash and sits below the others.
