About the BSE Clean Environment
BSE Clean Environment measures the performance of companies that represent the clean environment theme: companies in the clean energy production value chain, makers of electric vehicles and batteries, and recyclers of plastic, metals, waste and water. It is maintained by BSE Index Services Pvt. Ltd.
How companies are chosen
Companies are drawn from the BSE 1000 and must belong to one of the basic industries named for this index.
A company must rank in the top 80% of the BSE 1000 by annualised daily traded value, and more than 25% of its revenue must come from clean environment and related businesses.
What counts as that revenue depends on the industry. Heavy electrical equipment, other electrical equipment and aerospace and defence companies qualify on products closely related to renewables, such as wind turbine generators and solar modules.
Passenger car and utility vehicle makers and two- and three-wheeler makers count revenue from electric vehicle sales. Integrated power utilities and power generators count revenue from renewable generation. Auto component makers count revenue from lithium-ion batteries.
Waste management companies count revenue from waste management, water supply and management companies count revenue from water supply, industrial minerals companies count metal recycling, and other textile products companies count PET recycling.
How it is weighted
Constituents are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalisation, which counts only a company's available float, with no single stock above 15%. The cap is applied each quarter, in Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec.
When it is reviewed
The index is rebalanced twice a year, effective on the Monday after the third Friday of Jun and Dec, using data as of the last trading day of Apr and Oct.
A company whose industry classification changes so that it becomes ineligible is deleted at the next quarterly share update.
Base date and value
The index was launched on 20 Jan 2026, and its values start from 18 Dec 2017.
