About the Nifty CPSE
The Nifty CPSE is an index of select Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), companies in which the Government of India holds a majority stake. It was built to facilitate the government's initiative to disinvest some of its stake in them through an exchange traded fund (ETF), which tracks the index.
How companies are chosen
A company qualifies if it is on the list of CPSEs published by the Department of Public Enterprise, is listed on NSE, and has more than 51% government holding under the promoter category.
It also needs an average free float market capitalization of more than ₹1,000 crore for the six months to Dec 2019, and must comply with IRDA dividend norms.
How it is weighted
The index is calculated on free float market capitalization, the value of the shares available for public trading. Each company is capped at 20%, so a weight can rise above 20% between realignments as prices move.
When it is reviewed
Weights are realigned to the 20% cap on a quarterly basis, effective from the last trading day of the quarter, in Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec. A corporate action such as a merger or de-merger triggers a review. Changes to the index, including its eligibility criteria, inclusions, exclusions and capping, are made on a formal request from the CPSE ETF issuer appointed by the Ministry of Disinvestment.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 1 Jan 2009 and a base value of 1000, and was launched on 18 Mar 2014. Its history is back-tested to 1 Jan 2004, and in that history a shortlisted CPSE that listed on NSE after that date enters on the first trading day of the quarter after its listing.
