About stock market holidays 2013
Stock market holidays 2013 are the days NSE and BSE were closed for share trading in that calendar year: 19 holidays, only 13 of them on a weekday, because six fell on a Saturday or Sunday. That year the Diwali muhurat session was held on a Sunday.
Holidays in 2013
Republic Day fell on Saturday 26 Jan, and Mahashivratri (10 Mar), Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti (14 Apr), Dasera (13 Oct), Diwali Laxmi Puja (3 Nov) and Guru Nanak Jayanti (17 Nov) on Sundays. The first weekday closure was Holi on Wednesday 27 Mar and the last Christmas on Wednesday 25 Dec. Jan, Feb, Jun and Jul had no weekday closure.
Festival closures
Most closures follow festivals whose dates move each year, among them Holi, Ram Navmi on 19 Apr, Ganesh Chaturthi on 9 Sep, Bakri ID on 16 Oct and Moharram on 15 Nov. Diwali brought two entries: Laxmi Puja on 3 Nov and Balipratipada on Monday 4 Nov. The Friday before Easter fell on 29 Mar, two days after Holi.
Muhurat trading
Muhurat trading is a short special session held on the evening of Diwali Laxmi Puja, marking the start of the new Samvat year, the Hindu calendar year that begins at Diwali. The page marks 3 Nov 2013, a Sunday, as a muhurat session, so the exchanges opened for that session on a Sunday. The exchanges announce its hours by circular before Diwali, and the normal daytime session stays closed.
Settlement
Settlement is when shares and money change hands after a trade. Indian shares settled two working days after the trade, called T+2, and a holiday is not a working day. Holi on Wednesday 27 Mar and the Friday before Easter on 29 Mar left Thursday 28 Mar as the only trading day between them.
