About stock market holidays 2024

Stock market holidays 2024 are the days the NSE and BSE share markets stayed closed in that calendar year. This page lists 22 closures with date, weekday and holiday name, and marks the ones that fell on a Saturday or Sunday and the Diwali muhurat session.

Holidays in 2024

Of the 22 closures listed, 17 fell on a weekday and 5 on a weekend: Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti (14 Apr), Shri Mahavir Jayanti (21 Apr), Ganesh Chaturthi (7 Sep), Dussehra (12 Oct) and Diwali-Balipratipada (2 Nov). A holiday on a Saturday or Sunday costs no trading day. The year-at-a-glance calendar counts closed days by month, weekends included: Apr 2024 and Nov 2024 have four each, and Feb 2024 has none.

Unusual closures

Most 2024 holidays are festivals or national days, but three were one-off. The exchanges shut on 22 Jan 2024 under the Negotiable Instruments Act, a government-declared public holiday. Markets also closed for the Parliamentary elections on 20 May (the Mumbai polling day) and for the Maharashtra Assembly elections on 20 Nov.

Muhurat trading

Muhurat trading is a short special session held on the evening of Diwali Laxmi Pujan, as an auspicious start to the new Samvat year (the Hindu calendar year that traders date from Diwali). In 2024 it took place on Friday 1 Nov, when the regular day session stayed closed. The exchanges announce the hour by circular shortly before Diwali; in 2024 the session started at 6:00 pm and ran for about an hour.

Settlement and holidays

Settlement is the handover of shares and money that completes a trade. In 2024 Indian shares settled the next working day, called T+1. A holiday is not a working day, so a trade made just before one settles after it. A stock bought on the last session before a closure appears in the demat account only after the break.

Other segments

The list covers the days the exchanges were closed for trading in shares. Currency, interest rate and commodity segments keep their own calendars, so a day can close one segment and leave another open.
