About stock market holidays 2021
Stock market holidays 2021 are the days the Indian stock exchanges, NSE and BSE, kept their equity markets closed that year. The list has 19 holidays, 14 on weekdays and 5 on a Saturday or Sunday, plus one evening muhurat session on Diwali.
Trading holidays in 2021
The exchanges closed their equity segment on 14 weekdays in 2021: Republic Day (26 Jan), Mahashivratri (11 Mar), Holi (29 Mar), the Friday before Easter (2 Apr), Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti (14 Apr), Ram Navami (21 Apr), Id-Ul-Fitr (13 May), Bakri Id (21 Jul), Moharram (19 Aug), Ganesh Chaturthi (10 Sep), Dussehra (15 Oct), Diwali-Laxmi Pujan (4 Nov), Diwali-Balipratipada (5 Nov) and Gurunanak Jayanti (19 Nov).
Holidays on a weekend
Five holidays fell on a Saturday or Sunday: Mahavir Jayanti (25 Apr), Maharashtra Day (1 May), Independence Day (15 Aug), Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (2 Oct) and Christmas (25 Dec). The markets are shut on weekends anyway, so these cost no trading day. This page marks them and counts only the weekday closures as lost trading days.
Muhurat trading on Diwali
Muhurat trading is a short evening session on Diwali-Laxmi Pujan, a day the main market is closed, held to open the new Samvat year. In 2021 it fell on Thursday 4 Nov. Diwali-Balipratipada closed the market on Friday 5 Nov, so apart from that one session shares did not trade from 4 Nov to 7 Nov.
Settlement around a holiday
Settlement is the exchange of shares and money after a trade. In 2021 it ran on a T+2 cycle: two working days after the trade day. Weekends and exchange holidays are not working days, so a trade made before a holiday settled a day later than usual. Five of the 2021 holidays fell on a Friday, among them Ganesh Chaturthi on 10 Sep and Dussehra on 15 Oct, each making a three-day closure.
Other segments
The list covers the equity market. Commodity and currency derivatives follow their own holiday calendars, so those segments can differ from this list.
