About stock market holidays 2018
Stock market holidays 2018 are the days the NSE and BSE share markets were closed during that calendar year. This page lists 19 holidays with date and weekday, marks the ones that fell on a weekend, and marks each month's holidays on a calendar, with a year selector from 2007 to 2026.
Holidays in 2018
The page lists 19 holidays for 2018. Three fell on a weekend: Ram Navami on Sunday 25 Mar, Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti on Saturday 14 Apr and Id-Ul-Fitr on Saturday 16 Jun. That leaves 16 weekdays on which the market was shut. Mar 2018 had four holidays, one of them a Sunday, so three weekday closures, the same as Nov 2018. Jul 2018 had none.
Festival closures
Most closures follow religious festivals whose dates move each year, such as Mahashivratri on 13 Feb, Holi on 2 Mar, the Friday before Easter on 30 Mar, Ganesh Chaturthi on 13 Sep and Dasera on 18 Oct. Diwali brought two: Laxmi Pujan on 7 Nov and Balipratipada on 8 Nov. Republic Day, Independence Day and Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti stay on fixed dates, and Maharashtra Day on 1 May is a state holiday that also closes the Mumbai-based exchanges.
Muhurat trading
Muhurat trading is a short special session held on the evening of Diwali Laxmi Pujan, marking the start of the new Samvat year, the Hindu calendar year that begins at Diwali. The page marks 7 Nov 2018, a Wednesday, as a muhurat session. The exchanges announce its hours by circular before Diwali, and the normal daytime session stays closed that day.
Settlement
Settlement is when shares and money actually change hands after a trade. In 2018 Indian shares settled two working days after the trade, called T+2, and a holiday is not a working day. Thursday holidays were common that year: Ganesh Chaturthi (13 Sep), Moharram (20 Sep), Dasera (18 Oct) and Balipratipada (8 Nov) all fell on a Thursday.
