About stock market holidays 2014
Stock market holidays 2014 are the days NSE and BSE were closed for share trading in that calendar year: 21 holidays, 19 of them on a weekday. Two were polling days, 24 Apr for the general election in Mumbai and 15 Oct for Maharashtra's state election.
Holidays in 2014
Republic Day on Sunday 26 Jan and Mahavir Jayanti on Sunday 13 Apr fell on a weekend and cost no trading day. The first weekday closure was Mahashivratri on Thursday 27 Feb and the last was Christmas on Thursday 25 Dec.
Apr 2014 had five holidays, one of them a Sunday, so four weekday closures, including Parliamentary Elections on 24 Apr. Oct 2014 had the most weekday closures, six. Jan, Jun and Sep 2014 had none.
Election closures
The page lists Parliamentary Elections on Thursday 24 Apr, the polling day for Mumbai, where both exchanges are based, and General Assembly Elections on Wednesday 15 Oct, the day Maharashtra voted for its state assembly.
Diwali and muhurat trading
Diwali brought two entries: Laxmi Pujan on Thursday 23 Oct and Balipratipada on Friday 24 Oct. The page marks 23 Oct as a muhurat trading session, a short special session held in the evening to mark the start of the new Samvat year, the Hindu calendar year that begins at Diwali. The exchanges announce its hours by circular.
Settlement
Settlement is when shares and money actually change hands after a trade. In 2014 Indian shares settled two working days after the trade, called T+2, and a holiday or weekend is not a working day.
Oct 2014 shows how holidays stretch this: 2, 3 and 6 Oct were closed and 4 and 5 Oct a weekend, so after Wednesday 1 Oct the market next traded on Tuesday 7 Oct.
