About stock market holidays 2020

Stock market holidays 2020 are the 19 days NSE and BSE listed as closed for share trading that year. Seven fell on a Saturday or Sunday, so 12 took away a trading day. The page gives each holiday's date, weekday and name, and marks the Diwali Muhurat session on Saturday, 14 Nov.

Holidays in 2020

The exchanges published 19 holidays for 2020. Twelve fell Monday to Friday and so took away a trading day. The other seven fell on a Saturday or Sunday and cost nothing: Republic Day (26 Jan), Bakri Id (1 Aug), Independence Day (15 Aug), Ganesh Chaturthi (22 Aug), Muharram (30 Aug), Dasera (25 Oct) and Diwali-Laxmi Pujan (14 Nov). The first weekday closure was Mahashivratri on 21 Feb and the last was Christmas on 25 Dec.

Four weekday closures fell between 2 Apr and 14 Apr, the most of any month: Ram Navami (2 Apr), Mahavir Jayanti (6 Apr), the Friday before Easter (10 Apr) and Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti (14 Apr). Jun, Jul and Sep had none.

Muhurat trading

Muhurat trading is a short evening session that opens the new Samvat year on Diwali-Laxmi Pujan. In 2020 that day fell on Saturday, 14 Nov, so the exchanges opened on a weekend for this one session. The page marks 14 Nov with this session and notes that it falls on a weekend.

Settlement

Settlement is the transfer of shares and money after a trade. In 2020 equity trades settled two working days after the trade day (T+2), and holidays are not working days, so they push settlement later. Diwali-Balipratipada closed Monday 16 Nov, after the Saturday muhurat session and the weekend, so regular trading resumed on Tuesday 17 Nov.

Holidays in Aug 2020

Aug 2020 had four holidays, more than any month but Apr 2020, yet lost no trading day: Bakri Id (1 Aug), Independence Day (15 Aug) and Ganesh Chaturthi (22 Aug) fell on a Saturday and Muharram (30 Aug) on a Sunday.
