About stock market holidays 2023
Stock market holidays 2023 are the days the NSE and BSE share markets stayed closed that year. This page lists each of the 19 holidays with its date and weekday, marks the ones that fell on a weekend, and counts closures by month, and notes the Diwali muhurat session, which fell on a Sunday.
Holidays in 2023
The page lists 19 trading holidays for 2023. Four fell on a Saturday or Sunday, so 15 cost a weekday: Mahashivratri on 18 Feb, Id-Ul-Fitr on 22 Apr, Muharram on 29 Jul and Diwali Laxmi Pujan on 12 Nov are the weekend ones. Apr 2023 had four closures, the most of any month, and Nov 2023 had three. Mar 2023 and Oct 2023 had two each.
Long weekends
Six of the 15 weekday holidays fell on a Monday or a Friday and so made a three-day closure with the weekend: the Friday before Easter (7 Apr), Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti (14 Apr), Maharashtra Day (1 May), Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (2 Oct), Gurunanak Jayanti (27 Nov) and Christmas (25 Dec). Six more fell on a Tuesday.
Muhurat trading
Muhurat trading is a one-hour session on Diwali Laxmi Pujan, which traders take as a lucky start to the new Samvat year. In 2023 the day was Sunday 12 Nov, and the exchanges opened for that one session in the evening. The page marks the day as a muhurat session that fell on a weekend. Diwali Balipratipada on 14 Nov was a full holiday.
Settlement and holidays
Settlement is the handover of shares and money that completes a trade. Indian shares moved to next working day settlement, called T+1, in phases, and from 27 Jan 2023 every listed share settled that way. A holiday is not a working day, so a trade made before a holiday settled after it. Shares bought on Thursday 13 Apr 2023, before the closure on 14 Apr, settled only after the long weekend.
