About stock market holidays 2009

Stock market holidays 2009 are the days the NSE and BSE were closed for trading in shares during that calendar year. This page lists 24 holidays with date, weekday and name, marks the ones that fell on a weekend, and shows each month's closures on a calendar with a year selector.

Holidays in 2009

The page lists 24 holidays for 2009. Five fell on a weekend: Buddha Pournima on Saturday 9 May, Independence Day on Saturday 15 Aug, Ganesh Chaturthi on Sunday 23 Aug, Laxmi Puja on Saturday 17 Oct and Bakri ID on Saturday 28 Nov. That leaves 19 weekdays on which the market was shut, from Moharram on Thursday 8 Jan to the second Moharram on Monday 28 Dec. Apr 2009 had five closures, the most of any month, and Jun and Jul had none.

Election closures

Two 2009 closures were not festivals. Mumbai voted in the parliamentary elections on Thursday 30 Apr, and the Maharashtra assembly elections closed the market on Tuesday 13 Oct.

Moharram twice

Moharram appears on 8 Jan and again on 28 Dec. Several holidays follow the Islamic calendar, whose year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian one, so an observance can fall twice in one calendar year. Id-E-Milad (10 Mar), Ramzan ID (21 Sep) and Bakri ID (28 Nov) follow it too, so their dates move each year. Republic Day, Maharashtra Day, Gandhi Jayanti and Christmas stay fixed.

Muhurat trading

Muhurat trading is a short evening session held on Diwali to mark the start of the new Samvat year, the Hindu calendar year that begins at Diwali. In 2009 Laxmi Puja fell on Saturday 17 Oct, and the page marks that row as a muhurat session, held on a day the exchanges are otherwise shut.

Settlement and holidays

In 2009 Indian shares settled on T+2, the cycle in force since 1 Apr 2003: the shares and the money changed hands two working days after the trade, and a holiday is not a working day. Dasara on Monday 28 Sep followed the weekend, so after Friday 25 Sep the market next traded on Tuesday 29 Sep.
