About stock market holidays 2022
Stock market holidays 2022 are the days NSE and BSE were closed for share trading that year. The page lists 18 holidays with the date, weekday and name, of which 13 fell on weekdays, and marks the Muhurat trading session held on Diwali.
Holidays in 2022
The exchanges published 18 holidays for 2022. Thirteen fell Monday to Friday and so took away a trading day. The other five, Ram Navami (10 Apr), Maharashtra Day (1 May), Bakri Id (10 Jul), Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (2 Oct) and Christmas (25 Dec), fell on a Sunday and cost nothing. The first weekday closure was Republic Day on 26 Jan and the last was Gurunanak Jayanti on 8 Nov. The page marks each weekend holiday in its note column.
Muhurat trading
Muhurat trading is a short special session held on the evening of Diwali-Laxmi Pujan, a day the exchange otherwise treats as a holiday. In 2022 it ran on Monday, 24 Oct, with the market open from 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm and trade modification until 7:25 pm. The page marks 24 Oct with this session.
Settlement
In 2022 Indian shares were moving from settlement two working days after the trade (T+2) to the next working day (T+1), in phases that began with the smallest companies by market value on 25 Feb 2022 and ended with the largest on 27 Jan 2023. Trades in the Muhurat session settled like any other day's. A holiday is not a working day, so a trade made just before 24 Oct or 26 Oct settled after the closure. Diwali-Laxmi Pujan (24 Oct) and Diwali-Balipratipada (26 Oct) were separate holidays with a trading day between them.
Holidays set in advance
The exchanges announce each year's holiday list before the year begins. In 2022 one closure on 14 Apr covered two observances, Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti and Mahavir Jayanti, and 2022 had no election closure. The list on this page is the one for 2022 as a whole, covering equity trading on both exchanges.
