About stock market holidays 2016
Stock market holidays 2016 are the days NSE and BSE were closed for share trading in that calendar year: 19 holidays, 15 of them on a weekday, from Republic Day on 26 Jan to Gurunanak Jayanti on 14 Nov. The other four fell on a Sunday and cost no trading day.
Holidays in 2016
Maharashtra Day (1 May), Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (2 Oct), Diwali Laxmi Pujan (30 Oct) and Christmas (25 Dec) fell on a Sunday, and the page marks them as falling on a weekend.
Mar, Apr and Oct 2016 each had three weekday closures, the most of any month. Feb, May, Jun and Dec 2016 had none.
Muhurat trading
Muhurat trading is a short special session held on Diwali Laxmi Pujan, a day the market is otherwise closed. It marks the start of the new Samvat year, the Hindu calendar year that begins at Diwali, which traders regard as an auspicious time to begin. In 2016 Diwali Laxmi Pujan fell on Sunday, 30 Oct, and the page marks that row as a Muhurat session. The next day, 31 Oct (Diwali-Balipratipada), was a full holiday.
Settlement around holidays
Settlement is the exchange of shares and money after a trade. In 2016 equity trades settled two working days later (T+2), and a holiday is not a working day. A trade made just before a holiday therefore settled a day later than the calendar suggests.
How the page lists them
Each row gives the date, weekday and occasion, with a note where a holiday fell on a weekend or carried the muhurat session; 30 Oct carries both. The calendar below the list shades the closed days month by month, and links above it open every other year back to 2007.
