About stock market holidays 2015
Stock market holidays 2015 are the days NSE and BSE were closed for share trading in that calendar year: 19 holidays, 15 of them on a weekday, from Republic Day on 26 Jan to Christmas on 25 Dec. The list gives each date, weekday and occasion, and a calendar shows the closures month by month.
Holidays in 2015
Four holidays fell on a Saturday and cost no trading day: Ram Navami on 28 Mar, Id-Ul-Fitr on 18 Jul, Independence Day on 15 Aug and Moharram on 24 Oct. Apr 2015 and Nov 2015 had three weekday closures each, the most of any month.
Festival closures
Most closures follow festivals whose dates move each year, such as Mahashivratri on 17 Feb, Holi on 6 Mar, the Friday before Easter on 3 Apr, Ganesh Chaturthi on 17 Sep, Bakri ID on 25 Sep and Dasera on 22 Oct. Diwali brought two: Laxmi Pujan on 11 Nov and Balipratipada on 12 Nov. Republic Day, Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and Christmas fall on fixed dates, and Maharashtra Day on 1 May is a state holiday that also closes the Mumbai-based exchanges.
Muhurat trading
Muhurat trading is a short special session held on the evening of Diwali Laxmi Pujan, marking the start of the new Samvat year, the Hindu calendar year that begins at Diwali. The page marks 11 Nov 2015, a Wednesday, as a muhurat session. The normal daytime session stayed closed that day.
Settlement
Settlement is when shares and money actually change hands after a trade. In 2015 Indian shares settled two working days after the trade, called T+2, and a holiday is not a working day. Ganesh Chaturthi on Thursday 17 Sep and Bakri ID on Friday 25 Sep each shortened a week of trading to four days.
