About Nifty PSE index funds and ETFs

Nifty PSE index funds and ETFs are funds that hold the 20 public sector companies of the Nifty PSE, the index maintained by NSE Indices, in index weights, so that their return follows the index less costs.

What the Nifty PSE is

The Nifty PSE has 20 stocks listed on NSE in which the Central Government or a State Government holds at least 51% of the outstanding share capital, directly or indirectly. Its base date is 2 Jan 1995 at 1,000.

Who qualifies for the index

A company must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review, have traded on at least 90% of days in the last six months and have been listed for at least a month. If fewer than 10 eligible companies are in the Nifty 500, the top 800 companies by turnover and market capitalisation fill the gap. The final 20 are picked by free-float market capitalisation, the value of the shares normally available for trading.

Weights and reviews

Stocks are weighted by free-float market capitalisation. At each rebalancing, no stock may exceed 33% of the index and the top three together may not exceed 62%. The index is reviewed twice a year, with cut-off dates of 31 Jan and 31 Jul.

Funds on this page

This page lists the ETFs that track the Nifty PSE with tracking difference, tracking error, expense ratio, fund size and premium or discount, ordered by tracking difference nearest zero, then lowest expense ratio. An ETF without a one-year tracking difference shows only tracking error.

Tracking difference and tracking error

Tracking difference is the fund's one-year return minus the index's return. Costs usually pull it below zero. The after fee figure adds the year's average expense ratio back, showing the gap the fee does not explain. Tracking error is how far the fund's daily returns differed from the index's, as a yearly figure.

The expense ratio is the annual charge as a share of money invested, taken out of NAV (the value of one unit) daily. For an ETF, premium or discount is the median, across the month's trading days, of each day's close divided by that day's NAV, less one.
