About bonus shares in 2022

Bonus shares in 2022 are the bonus issues of companies listed on NSE or BSE whose ex-date fell in that calendar year. A bonus issue gives existing shareholders free extra shares in a fixed ratio, such as 1 for 2. The page groups them by month.

What the list covers

A company enters this list when it is listed on NSE or BSE and its bonus issue went ex in 2022. The year is set by the ex-date, not by the date the board announced the issue, so an issue announced in late 2021 appears here if its ex-date fell in 2022. Months run latest first. Bajaj Finserv gave 1 for 1 in Sep 2022, with the same ex-date as its split.

Ratio, record date and ex-date

The ratio "1 for 2" means one new share for every two held. The record date is the day the company reads its shareholder register to see who receives the shares. The ex-date is the first day the shares trade without the right to the bonus. Both dates are shown in every row.

Price after a bonus issue

A bonus issue converts reserves into shares and brings in no new money. With more shares sharing the same company, the price per share falls in proportion on the ex-date. The fall is an adjustment, not a loss, and prices on the site's charts and returns are adjusted for it.

Bonus issue, split and dividend

A stock split divides each share's face value into smaller parts and leaves reserves as they are. A bonus issue uses reserves to create new shares and the face value stays the same. A dividend pays cash.

Move to next-day settlement

From 25 Feb 2022 the exchanges moved shares from two-day settlement (T+2) to next-day settlement (T+1) in stages, starting with the 100 smallest companies by market cap and adding more each month, until every share settled T+1 from 27 Jan 2023. A share still on T+2 went ex one trading day before its record date; a share already on T+1 went ex on the record date itself. That is why the two dates match in some 2022 rows and differ in others.
