About the Nifty Sugar & Ethanol
The Nifty Sugar & Ethanol Index aims to track 15 securities from the FMCG sector that are directly involved in making sugar or ethanol. It is maintained by NSE Indices Limited.
How companies are chosen
Equity stocks traded on NSE with a listing history of at least 1 month are eligible. A stock must belong to one of the basic industries listed as eligible for this index, or to the FMCG sector, and be directly involved in making sugar or ethanol.
A stock must rank within the top 20 on both 6-month average full market capitalisation and 6-month average daily turnover. The top 15 of those by 6-month average free-float market capitalisation, which counts only floating stock, the shares normally expected to be available for trading, are selected.
A non-member is added if its free-float market capitalisation is at least 1.5 times that of the smallest stock in the index.
How it is weighted
Weights follow free-float market capitalisation, with a cap of 15% on each stock at rebalancing.
Capping is done quarterly on the last trading day of Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec.
When it is reviewed
The index is reconstituted semi-annually, in Mar and Sep, using data for the six months to Jan and Jul, and rebalanced quarterly.
Suspension, delisting or a scheme of arrangement of a member triggers an additional ad-hoc reconstitution and rebalancing.
Base date and value
The index has a base date of 31 Mar 2021 and a base value of 1000. It was launched on 17 Jun 2026.
