About Nifty Next 50 index funds and ETFs

Nifty Next 50 index funds and ETFs are mutual fund schemes that hold the 50 stocks of the Nifty Next 50, the index of the next 50 large NSE companies after the Nifty 50. Each aims to return what the index returns, less costs.

The index

The Nifty Next 50 is maintained by NSE Indices. It is made of the companies in the Nifty 100 that are not in the Nifty 50. Its base date is 4 Nov 1996 with a base value of 1,000, and it was launched on 24 Dec 1996.

Weighting and review

The index is weighted by free-float market capitalisation: the market value of the shares available for trading. Stocks outside the futures and options segment are capped at 4.5% each and 10% together. The index is rebalanced twice a year, using data to 31 Jan and 31 Jul; funds trade to follow each change.

Tracking difference and tracking error

Tracking difference is the fund's return minus the index's return over the year to the month's end. Costs usually make it negative. After fee tracking difference adds back the year's average expense ratio, which leaves the gap that costs do not explain.

Tracking error is a yearly figure for how far the fund's daily returns moved apart from the index's.

Index funds and ETFs

An index fund is bought and redeemed at the day's NAV (net asset value, the price of one unit). An ETF is bought and sold on the exchange at a market price, which can differ from its NAV; the premium or discount column is the median, across the month's trading days, of each day's close divided by that day's NAV, less one.

This page lists both, sorted by closeness to the index, then by lowest expense ratio, with a Direct and Regular plan toggle. The expense ratio is charged daily against the NAV, so the returns shown already reflect it. Size is total assets across all plans at month end.
