About Nifty 100 index funds and ETFs

Nifty 100 index funds and ETFs are funds that hold the companies of the Nifty 100, the Nifty 50 and Nifty Next 50 combined, in the index's own weights, so their return follows the index less costs.

The index they track

The Nifty 100 is maintained by NSE Indices. It takes the top 100 companies by full market capitalisation (share price times all shares issued) from the Nifty 500. Each is weighted by free float market capitalisation, which counts only the shares normally available for trading. The base date is 1 Jan 2003 at 1000, and the index launched on 1 Dec 2005.

Index funds and ETFs

An index fund is bought and redeemed with the fund house at the day's NAV, the value of one unit, in a direct or a regular plan; the page switches between them. An ETF is listed and trades through a broker at a price that can sit above or below NAV, so the ETF table adds premium or discount: the median, across the month's trading days, of each day's close divided by that day's NAV, less one.

Tracking difference and tracking error

Tracking difference is the fund's return less the index's over the year to the month's end. Costs make it negative, so the figure nearest nought is the closest to the index. The after fee figure adds the year's average expense ratio back. Tracking error is how far the fund's daily returns differed from the index's, stated as a yearly figure.

Expense ratio, size and order

The expense ratio is the yearly charge as a share of money invested, taken out of NAV daily, so shown returns are already after it. Fund size is assets under management across all plans at month-end. Each table puts the fund closest to the index first, then the lowest expense ratio.
