About Nifty200 Momentum 30 index funds and ETFs

Nifty200 Momentum 30 index funds and ETFs are funds that hold the 30 Nifty 200 companies with the highest momentum scores, in the index's own weights, so their return follows the index less costs.

The index they track

A Nifty 200 company qualifies with a year's listing and trading in futures and options. Its 6-month and 12-month price returns are each divided by the volatility of its daily returns over a year, and the two results are averaged into a Normalised Momentum Score. The 30 highest scores make the index. The base date is 1 Apr 2005 at 1000, and the index launched on 25 Aug 2020.

Weights and reviews

A stock's weight is its free float market cap (the value of the shares that can trade) multiplied by its score, capped at the lower of 5% or 5 times its weight on free float market cap alone. Members change every Jun and Dec: the top 15 by score always join, and members ranked below 45 always leave.

Why funds trail the index

A momentum ranking can replace many members at one review, and every fund has to sell the leavers and buy the joiners when the index does. That trading cost, on top of the expense ratio, shows up in a fund's tracking difference.

Reading the tables

Index funds are bought and redeemed with the fund house at the day's NAV, the value of one unit, and the page switches between their direct and regular plans. ETFs trade on the exchange, so their table adds premium or discount: the median, across the month's trading days, of each day's close divided by that day's NAV, less one. Tracking difference is the fund's return less the index's over the year; nearer nought means a closer match. After fee adds the year's average expense ratio back. Tracking error is how much the daily gap varied, as a yearly figure. Funds are ordered closest to the index first, then by the lower expense ratio.
