About Nifty 8-13 yr G-Sec index funds and ETFs

Nifty 8-13 yr G-Sec index funds and ETFs hold central government bonds that mature in about 8 to 13 years, in the proportions of the Nifty 8-13 yr G-Sec Index. This page lists the funds that track it and ranks them by tracking difference, then expense ratio.

The index

The Nifty 8-13 yr G-Sec Index is maintained by NSE Indices and tracks the most traded government securities (G-Secs, bonds issued by the Government of India) with 8 to 13 years left to maturity. Its base date is 3 Jan 2011, with a base value of 1000.

How the index picks bonds

The index holds three bonds, chosen by turnover. A bond needs more than ₹5,000 Cr outstanding, and special securities, floating rate bonds, inflation-linked bonds and sovereign green bonds are excluded. Weights are 40% on liquidity and 60% on outstanding amount.

The index is reviewed monthly, with changes effective on the last working day of the month. A new bond replaces a member only if it has more than 9 years to maturity and its average daily turnover and number of trades are each at least twice the member's. A bond whose remaining life falls below 8 years leaves the index.

Tracking difference and tracking error

Tracking difference is the fund's return less the index's return over the same period. Costs usually make it negative. Tracking error is how much the fund's daily returns differed from the index's, stated as a yearly figure. After fee adds the year's average expense ratio back to the one-year tracking difference.

How this page ranks funds

Funds are listed closest to the index first, meaning the tracking difference nearest zero, then by the lowest expense ratio: the yearly charge as a share of money invested, taken from NAV daily. The table also shows fund size at month end and each ETF's premium or discount to its NAV.

ETFs and index funds on this index

The funds on this index are ETFs. An ETF trades on the exchange like a share, through a demat account, so its price can sit above or below its NAV.
