About Nifty 5YR Benchmark G-Sec index funds and ETFs
Nifty 5YR Benchmark G-Sec index funds and ETFs are funds that track the Nifty 5 yr Benchmark G-Sec Index, which follows a single Government of India bond: the most traded one with about five years left to maturity. This page compares them on tracking difference, tracking error, expense ratio and fund size.
The index they track
NSE Indices Limited maintains the index. It has a base date of 3 Sep 2001 and a base value of 1,000. It is a total return index, so it counts the bond's coupon interest as well as its price change.
One bond, chosen by trading
A bond is eligible if the Government of India issued it, it has between 4 and 6 years left to maturity, and it is not a special security, floating rate bond, inflation-linked bond or Sovereign Green Bond. Among eligible bonds, the one with the highest traded value in the previous month is the benchmark.
When the bond changes
The index is reviewed twice a month, with changes effective on the 15th and on the last working day (the previous working day if the 15th is a holiday). An existing bond is replaced only by an eligible bond whose traded volume over the review period is at least 1.25 times its own.
ETFs and how the list is ordered
The funds on this page are ETFs: listed units that trade through a broker at a market price, which can sit above or below NAV, the value of one unit. Premium or discount is the median, across the month's trading days, of each day's close divided by that day's NAV, less one. The list puts the fund closest to the index first, then the lowest expense ratio.
Tracking difference and tracking error
Tracking difference is the fund's one-year return less the index's; it can be positive as well as negative, and the figure nearest nought is the closest. The after fee figure adds the year's average expense ratio back. Tracking error is how much the fund's daily returns differed from the index's, stated as a yearly figure. The expense ratio is the yearly charge as a share of money invested.
